Solo Residency

Los Bravú (Dea Gómez & Diego Omil) have been awarded the Solo Residency at Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop and will be working in the studio above the gallery space from May, presenting a new body of work in August 2020.

We want to take the opportunity thank all the applicants for the time and energy they have invested in applying to our residency programme and we feel very lucky to have had the chance to get to know so many amazing artists.

We are an artistic duo, Dea Gómez and Diego Omil, who work together under the name “Los Bravú”. Our work is multidisciplinary and it includes everything from sculpture, dance or even comic, to painting, which is our main medium.

Our work claims to translate the classical artistic language into the contemporary artistic expression. We take the influence from the Italian Renaissance paintings as well as the latest artistic trends which rose up during the last decades, primarily from the internet era.

Conceptually, we aim to be chroniclers of the Contemporary era. We deal with some problems which are present nowadays. Concepts such as gentrification, scarcity labour float in the same pool as the cultural tourism, the environmentalism or the tradition. Places that we travel to, as well as the anthropological research of the society from those places are our strongest reference, it is our source of study and inspiration.

Technically, the painting acquires an essential importance. It goes beyond discourse that the gesture form the hand, the variety of textures and the shapes and colour composition surpass the figure in order to get the abstraction harmony.

After some years of a prominent career in Spain, where we made different shows at contemporary art galleries, institutions and art fairs, we have found 2020 as the ideal moment to make our career more international, and we have chosen London as the perfect city to begin this adventure. The massive cultural offer provided by the city allows us to be in contact with institutions and different cultural agents. Furthermore, we carry on the artistic trends, classical and contemporary ones, which permit us to expand our knowledge and the depth of our work. Nonetheless, living in London is not easy, let alone if you need a space to work. The possibility to get the studio at Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop releases the pressure and we could be focused on our artistic work one hundred per cent.
