Solveig Settemsdal

Solo Residency Exhibition

Private View: 31 January 2019, 6-9pm
Exhibition Dates: 1-8 February 2019

Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop is excited to present Pool, the solo residency exhibition by our current artist in residence Solveig Settemsdal. Please join us for the Private View on Thursday, 31 January 2019 from 6-9pm. Solveig Settemsdal has completed her 3 month residency at Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop and we are delighted to announce her exhibition Pool. Settemsdal is fascinated by the mutability of object and medium, and our indescribable and often impossible relationship to our environment. Investigating symbols of material prosperity, Solveig presents an upturned world where the understood becomes the uncanny and cannot return to the mundane. The ubiquitous luxury accessory of the swimming pool becomes a device to discuss the nature of water hoarding. Pool looks at mistranslations that occur between us and our technology in interpreting material reality : what goes missing, and what is created.

Solveig Settemsdal is a multi-disciplinary artist working across mediums including sculpture, video, photography and drawing. Her practice studies the fluidity and transience of materials, and how ideas and objects transform over time. Settemsdal won the Jerwood Drawing Prize for her video work Singularity (2016) and recently completed an MFA in sculpture at the Slade School of Fine Art (2018). Settemsdal has exhibited widely across the UK, Europe and Australia. Selected exhibitions include ENTANGLE, Bildmuseet, Umeå, Sweden (2018), Ars Electronica, Linz, Austria (2017) Sonica at CCA, Glasgow (2017) Imagine, Gippsland Art Gallery, Sale, Australia (2017), Drawing Biennial at Drawing Room, London (2017) Shadow Optics, Lubomirov/Angus-Hughes Gallery, London (2016) A Solid Above, Hardwick Gallery, Cheltenham (2016) Høstutstillingen, Statens Kunstforening, Oslo, Norway (2014).
