Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop is proud to announce the first association with the Critical Writing in Art & Design programme at the Royal College of Art.
Propland: Reprogramming Television Centre, is a collection of critical essays and speculative writings by students of the Critical Writing in Art & Design MA programme at the Royal College of Art. Propland serves as a platform for writing, where the legacies of an area, an institution, and a building, can be taken up and configured in new ways. This collection presents fourteen new writers who, by reprogramming Television Centre, recount less familiar histories, repurposing scenes we might have seen before, for worlds imagined otherwise.
Welcome to Propland, W12. Here lies Television Centre, former home of the BBC, amid a scatter of prop warehouses and costume stores. A façade junkyard, a museum of appearances, Propland teems with things flimsy, fabricated and faked. Here is a stage fo a revolving cast of institutions and developers, enlisting and excluding communities, as best fits their dreams.

Critical Writing in Art & Design
The Critical Writing in Art & Design programme at the Royal College of Art offers MA and research students opportunities to explore new ways of writing about art, design and emerging critical discourses. The programme is committed to the idea that writing and criticism are creative practices in their own right, with their own techniques, ethics and technologies.
