We are excited to present the Radical Residency® Exhibition, the result of the fifth instalment of the exciting and dynamic initiative that welcomes 10 artists from all over the world to work side by side in our main gallery space. The public was encouraged to visit the working studios during working studio time and we are now happy to see this intense programme culminating in a group exhibition featuring works created on the premises.

The 10 exhibiting artists are a multi-disciplined group of artists from 9 different countries: Tarek Sebastian Al-shammaa (UK), Axel Balaszi (Sweden/Hungary), Jan Chan (Hong Kong), Anna Kenneally (UK), Navot Miller (USA/France/Israel), Inês Neto dos Santos (Portugal), Sophie Percival (UK), Marianne Walker (UK) and Emily Woolley (UK).

Tarek Sebastian Al-shammaa (b.1982, London, UK) focuses on intercultural dynamics and the aesthetical presentation of the images produced. Coming from a multicultural background with migrant Iraqi and French parents, his paintings evoke a post-orientalism outlook. Tarek’s work conjures a historical standpoint, which depicts the obscurity of knowledge evidently placing the preface that nothing is clear history. The figure is conjured in many of the works with duplicity, Babylon is not Brueghel’s, the odalisque is not Matisse’s and Gerome’s Middle Eastern scenes are seen looking out not in. Tarek is a self-taught artist; after only a couple of shows his work is in collections throughout the world with highly regarded Collectors.

Axel Balazsi (b.1993, Borås, Sweden) recently graduated with a MA Fine Art from Goldsmiths College in 2019 and a BA Fine Art from Wimbledon College of Art in 2017. His work taps into visual communication, infrastructural systems, industrial design, to explore a state where an everyday object travels between industrial and domestic realms; from when it is produced and displayed to finally become a part of your everyday life. He is the recipient of the Black Swan Arts prize 2019, supported by Hauser & With Somerset. Recent Exhibitions include Demoiselles d’Avignon, Lundgren Gallery, Palma, Spain (2019), Through Space and Time, Deptford Project Space, London (2018) and Trax Playground, PML Projects, Spain (2016).

Jan Chan (b.1984, Hong Kong) is an artist with a background in makeup. He graduated with a MA Fine Art from Central Saint Martins, London in 2019. He works in a wide range of media, including photography, drawing and sculpture, examining the relationship between human and technology. Recent exhibitions include Loop, Helmut, Leipzig (2019), Boundaries & Beyond, Espacio Gallery, London (2019), Artsdepot Open 2018, North Finchley, London (2018), OVERPRINT: ag!tate act!vate, La Cambre & The printmaking Union, Belgium (2018) and Studio Complex Tate: Modern Workshop, London (2018).

Anna Kenneally (b.1995, London, UK) is a painter predominantly working in the medium of oil, focusing on large-scale figurative paintings. Anna studied Fine Art at Bath School of Art & Design, graduating in 2017, after getting a Distinction from Kingston University. Since then she has worked for artists such as Damien Hirst and Dale Chihuly. In 2018 Anna was part of Mall Galleries` ‘In the Studio’ programme and selected for multiple awards including The Ashurst Emerging Art Prize, Carpenters Wharf Residency and the ACS Studio Prize 2018. She lives and works in London.

Navot Miller (b.1991, Israel) is currently based in Berlin, Germany. He works with topics such as religion, architecture and identity through drawing, film and painting, contrasting positives and negativities of social encounters. Navot is a recipient of a Ernst Ludwig Ehrlich Scholarship. He studied at University of Arts Berlin and Weissensee Academy of Arts Berlin from 2017 and established himself as a permanent member of the art community KuLe, where he lives collectively with 17 other artists. Recent exhibitions include Juden Rein, Werkstattgalerie, Berlin, Germany (2019), True lies for singled freedom, Art Zagreb, Zagreb, Coratia (2019) and Post Paris Ass, curated by M.I/mi1glissé, Paris Ass Book Fair, Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2018).

Inês Neto dos Santos (b.1992, Lisbon, Portugal) is a multi-disciplinary artist and based in London – where she completed an MA in Visual Communication at Royal College of Art (2016) and a BA in Graphic and Media Design and Illustration at London College of Communication (2013). Her practice stands between performance and installation, using food, people and spaces as metaphors and prompts for discussion and conversation. Her work focuses on ideas around sustainability, narrative, collaboration and togetherness and enquires around relationships between humans and nature. Inês has exhibited in London, Lisbon, Kuwait City, Madrid, Athens and Porto.

Sophie Percival (b. 1988, UK) earned a BSc in Architecture from the The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL, London in 2016 after an BA in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Art in 2011. She lives and works in London. She works across a range of media and techniques including photography and film, installation and sculpture, at the intersections of fine art, architectural design, and photography. She founded Studio SP in 2018, a photography studio, where she also runs fabrication workshops for architects and artists. Current projects include a new public art work for Newham Council in 2020.

Marianne Walker (b.1970, Bridlington, East Yorkshire, UK) holds a BA Hons from Sunderland University (1993) and a MA Sculpture from Wimbledon School of Art (2002). Her practice is based around drawing, the application of ink or graphite to 3D surfaces and drawing as an act of incarnation. Marianne is a recipient of the Observer Magazine New British Artist Award, 2002. Selected exhibitions include Jerwood Drawing Prize 2002, Romantic Detachment, P.S.1 MoMA, New York, USA (2004), Orions Shorts Film Festival, High Desert Test Sites, California (2006), Alchemical Reactions, Café Oto, London (2011), From Here & There, Drawings from Colorado and Wales, Clara Hatton Gallery, University of Colorado (2014), Contemporary British Drawing, Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts, China (2015) and Barbican Arts Group Trust Open (2018).

Emily Woolley (b.1993, UK) is an artist living and working in South East London. She graduated from the Goldsmiths BA Fine Art in 2015 with First-class honours. Emily’s work has been included in numerous group shows and she recently had her first solo show Protean (A Retracing) at AMP Gallery, London. She has had her work included in several publications, most recently interviewed by Boundary Art. She is a returning contributor to Perpetual Inventory, an independent zine exploring process in sculpture practice.
