Rogue Parsley

Unit 1 Gallery I Workshop is delighted to present Rogue Parsley, a solo exhibition by Thomas Garnon.

Rogue Parsley is an exhibition marking the end of Thomas Garnon’s three month residency. Thomas endeavours to present a journey, not only of the artist’s work, but also of the journey that you, the visitor, will take as you enter this installation which questions what is ‘the gallery space’ and ‘the exhibition’. Crafting sculptures out of easily sourced materials such as tissue paper, cardboard and netted wire, Garnon’s work seeks to remove hierarchy of the gallery space and the way in which we interact within it, often with hushed tones and self-conscious eyes. Diverse and uninhibited, the installation itself is a temporal gesture, materialised in blue crayon on white surfaces. Digital prints sit alongside these hand-drawn markings. A breeze through an open window invites movement, instilling an element of duration and flux. Nothing is static or permanent. Unlike the precisely positioned works of institutional galleries and museums which lie, untouchable and precious, inside glass boxes or cordoned off behind velvet rope, ‘Rogue Parsley’ resists definition, seeking instead to prompt conversations, questions. In this body of work, Garnon challenges us to become more than just a mere spectator; he asks us to step inside this space and become a part of it, to actively engage in a dialogue with our surroundings. As the cryptic title, Rogue Parsley, Garnon invites you to confront and question object making, the act of exhibition presentation and installation- essentially.  By playfully disrupting these institutional habits Garnon’s solo show confounds and entreats us joyfully, yet intelligently by throwing out the conventions but still quoting them, suddenly the humble packing materials have a chance for the museum wall.
