Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop is proud to present Black Chat, Sew Rib, the Solo Residency Exhibition by our 12th Solo Resident Sarah Dwyer, who has been working in the studio space above the gallery (January—March 2020).

Sarah Dwyer came to the solo residency with a clear proposition in mind, the desire to expand her practice into the realm of sculpture. It is thrilling to have had Sarah using her time here at Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop to explore the 3D through experimentation and studio ‘play’. Witnessing this exciting evolution has been both enlightening and rewarding and it is fascinating to discover that the relationship between Sarah’s paintings and sculpture is inseparable. Whilst Sarah conjures volumes and spaces in her paintings, this new exploration of physical space feels quite liberating. Drawing is at the heart of her practice and within the medium of sculpture it is no different for her. She separates the line and pops it from the flat plane, juxtaposed with the solids floating and occupying a space the viewer can circumnavigate. Multiple layers and distances between sculptural drawings allow the viewer ever-changing compositions depending on the position of the gaze. An experiential walk through painting made into space is what is at play here. Sarah sculpts and then draws and then sculpts again in a constant dialogue between the volumes and planes and in turn has manifested a way to give this experience to the viewer. Blurring the ‘lines’ between painting and sculpture, and it is very likely that Sarah is neither and both.
